About
The Mississippi Animal Rescue League, MARL, is a private 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals. Chartered in 1969, we are the largest full service animal welfare organization in Central Mississippi providing care and basic medical services for thousands of homeless and unwanted animals each year. We do not receive any general operating funds from any state or federal agency.
When you support MARL – whether by making a donation, volunteering your time or by spreading the work about the vital work we do- you support our dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, and burros, and the people we also exist to serve. We are a voice for animals who cannot speak for themselves.
MARL is an “open admission” shelter- that means we accept every animal that comes in the door. Other shelters in the area re “limited admission”, meaning they accept a limited, finite number of animals. In our state, it is primarily left to private organizations and city animal control agencies to provide shelter and care for unwanted animals.
One of our key goals is to find loving homes for all animals in our facility. As an “open admission” shelter, we take in on an average of 50-60 animals a day and many more in the spring and summer. Local “limited admission” shelters turn animals away when they are full. We work very hard to provide loving and humane treatment and good homes for each and every animal that comes through our doors. Sadly, we receive more animals than there are homes available. Being an “open admission” shelter, we face the hard reality of animal overpopulation each day.

About
Located in rural Grenada, Mississippi, Hope Animal Sanctuary provides a unique refuge for many animals who have been victims of abuse and neglect and has helped thousands get a second chance at finding forever homes.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters we were able to rebuild in 2018, which helped us revolutionize the way we shelter animals here and increase our capacity.
Our sanctuary isn’t a typical setup. The main building, which houses state-of-the-art veterinary rooms and serves as a welcome and education center for visitors, is surrounded by a neighborhood of 20 tiny houses.
Nineteen of those houses are for dogs who get to live in small groups with each other, instead of being kenneled alone. Each house is temperature-controlled and comes complete with its own grass-filled yard for them to play in and a shaded porch, which is perfect for lounging.
JUSTICE – Hope Animal Sanctuary works in partnership with our Justice for Animals campaign to conduct investigations and coordinate rescues to seize abused animals with local law enforcement. We rescue animals suffering from starvation, disease, violent abuse, and extreme neglect, and have also saved exotic and farmed animals, and intervened to help even more animals in puppy mills, kept by “collectors,” animal dealers, and dogfighting rings.
HOPE – Hope Animal Sanctuary facilitates the adoptions of hundreds of animals each year, working with several rescue partners to place more than 500 dogs and cats each year in wonderful forever homes. And for those too traumatized by their past lives, they have a home for life at the sanctuary.

About
At CARA, we believe in the theme,
“Until every cage is empty.”
But no matter how many we and others rescue, we know that promise can never be fulfilled if many thousands of unwanted dogs and cats are born in our state every year.
So as we look to the future, our mission must grow to include changing hearts and minds so that Mississippi can end this tragic cycle.

About
BARL does not receive any government funding, therefore, is dependent on donations from individuals and businesses, and many fund-raising efforts.
In 2020, we took in over 1,400 dogs and cats, working to find them homes through adoption or transport to other shelters, where they found homes.
In addition, we financially assisted in the spay/neuter of over 240 owned and community animals in the tri-county area.
BARL’s mission is to humanely care for shelter animals while contributing to community activities that reduce pet overpopulation, encourage responsible pet ownership, protect public health and safety, and promote the human-animal bond.
BARL was incorporated in 1981 as a limited-admission animal welfare group to sponsor the care, treatment and well being of animals in the Brookhaven area. In 1982 we received our 501c3 status.
BARL remained an all-volunteer organization until 2006, when we moved into our current facility. At this point, it was necessary to hire a part-time staff person to handle daily cleaning; however, volunteers are still the key to BARL’s success.
Over the years, BARL has expanded its services from Lincoln County to encompass neighboring Franklin and Copiah counties.

About
The Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM) is the largest animal welfare organization in the state of Mississippi. In 2019, HSSM cared for over 7,000 homeless pets.
Since our incorporation in 1952, HSSM has been committed to ending pet overpopulation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. HSSM is an open-admissions shelter and turns no pet away based on health, age, or behavioral status. Oftentimes our open-admissions status in a community with a disproportionately high number of homeless pets leads to needless euthanasia of adoptable pets in our shelter HSSM has now vowed to change this.
In January of 2012, HSSM’s Board of Directors adopted the most progressive initiative ever undertaken by our organization. This initiative, entitled Countdown to Zero, aims to eliminate the euthanasia of all healthy and treatable pets in our community. Our dream is to make South Mississippi a truly humane community where every pet lives out his/her life in a loving home. When HSSM achieves this goal, we will be the first community in the Deep South to achieve this milestone.

About
The Stone County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is a recognized IRS 501c3 nonprofit and a registered charity in the state of Mississippi. The Stone County SPCA operates the Jeanne H. Miller Animal Shelter for the homeless cats and dogs in Stone County. Thanks to your support, our animal shelter has a live release rate of 97% in 2020, and has not euthanized an animal for lack of space since its opening.
The Stone County SPCA was organized in 2009 and opened the Jeanne H. Miller Animal Shelter in 2012. We have always been a no-kill shelter. During 2020 we took in over 700 animals and had a live release rate of 97%. We do this by keeping adoption fees low and transporting a large percentage of our animals (56% of our dogs and puppies).
Stone County, like most rural places in the country, has too many unwanted pets for its population to absorb. Therefore, the Stone County SPCA has concentrated its efforts to both transport unwanted pets, and spay and neuter as much of the pet population as possible.
The most significant change in the animal shelter since 2018 has been the improvement and addition of play yards for the dogs. Existing play yards were improved. Four of them were expanded to include a shade tree. Also, three-foot privacy fencing was put up to decrease fighting between yards. One additional play yard was added. The funding for these improvements came through a $3000 grant from the William and Charlotte Parks Foundation. Also, through the John and Kathy Kirker, permanent wood siding has been put up to replace heavy plastic siding.
We also received in early 2019 $4860 from the Wilson Fund of the MS Gulf Coast Community Foundation to purchase new kennels to replace our old and dilapidated small dog and puppy kennels.
Also, the Stone County SPCA received $3000 from a generous donor in early 2019 to add five play yards for long term residents. This gift along with funds raised a tree sale covered the cost of these new play yards. The trees were donated from GreenForest Nursery.
The Stone County SPCA received $15000 in funding for medical care of shelter pets from the Petco Foundation. These much-needed funds went towards pharmaceuticals and veterinary costs to care for sick and injured animals and prepare them for adoption.
