Canine Rehabilitation Center and Cat Sanctuary was founded by Kristen Ivey in March of 2011. Kristen became involved in animal welfare many years prior as a volunteer for a high-volume shelter and had rescued and/or placed a few special needs dogs on her own. She ran another business during those years, but loved her time working with shelter dogs, volunteering, running play groups, and teaching classes with other volunteers.
As years went by and Kristen learned the ins-and-outs of the system, she knew there was a niche that desperately needed to be filled. Back then, she and a couple other volunteers had built a solid relationship with the shelter they were closely connected to and began taking the at-risk dogs and placing them on their own. That experience helped shaped her vision for Canine Rehabilitation Center and Cat Sanctuary long before it was an official nonprofit organization. The focus was always long-term shelter dogs, dogs with multiple owner returns, dogs who were suffering from trauma, and also those labeled unadoptable and scheduled to be euthanized.
Kristen’s heart was with the overlooked,the dogs who fell through the cracks of the high- volume adoption system.
These special dogs needed extra help so they too could find a loving home all their own.
Today, the primary focus is still the same. Canine Rehabilitation Center and Cat Sanctuary doesn’t care about age, breed, medical conditions, history, or even labels. We just care. The focus is rescue, recovery, training, and placement of at-risk dogs, providing a refuge and opportunity for dogs who are out of options and desperately needing a new start.
The dogs who come into our care have amazing stories of strength, triumph, and survival.
Some have given much of their lives to science and laboratory research, others have suffered from neglect, abuse, hoarding, or puppy mills, or have endured long-term confinement or isolation.
In addition, we act as a support for rescues and shelters, taking in dogs who have been waiting for extended periods of time to find a home, or who have been returned multiple times.

This rescue is named after two very special dogs that I was blessed to have in my life. That the universe found me to be worthy of such a gift is forever humbling. This rescue is their legacy. It is based on Connor and Millie’s sheer tenacity and determination to survive; their desire to love, be loved, and the ability to forgive.
No rescue can survive without dedicated volunteers. With CMDR, you will be given all of the tools you need to be the best temporary fur parent you can be. We provide support with tutorials on in home care, emergency support, dietary advice and all medical is paid for by CMDR. We will also be here for you if you need time off to take care of personal issues. As we grow we will be providing hand outs and online ways to increase your knowledge and confidence.
We are looking for experienced fosters who have the knowledge to care for senior dogs or dogs with medical issues. Our dogs have been traumatized and will need special care and attention. Please only adults with their own homes and transportation apply. If you rent, we require a letter from your landlord approving dogs to be fostered. We welcome Vet Techs and medical personnel.

In 2011, the Stevens family began volunteering together at a small animal shelter. For two years, they would take a whole day each weekend walking dogs or tossing a ball in the yard, cleaning litter boxes and playing with the kitties, or taking a lucky pup on a field trip. Kendall, the youngest of the family, created a special bond with a shelter dog named Athens. With a house full of their own dogs, the Stevens were unable to take Athens home. The 9-year-old girl was inspired to do all she could to help Athens find a place to belong.
The bond between a shelter dog and this little girl became the catalyst that is Hearts Alive Village. Kendall dreamed of a sanctuary where she could help homeless animals like Athens. She wrote about it in a 5th grade English journal where she named her organization Hearts Alive. When Christy Stevens read her daughter’s words, she asked Kendall “ Is this really your dream?” Kendall answered, “It’s what I want to do more than anything in the world, but I didn’t think it was possible because you work too much at your job, Mom.” Christy’s heart broke.
It was true that she worked very long hours. But, it was absolutely unacceptable that this fact should stand in the way of Kendall’s dream. She set out to show her daughter that dreams could come true no matter what the perceived challenges. The whole family got behind the idea! They started small in the fall of 2013 with Kendall’s Kupboard, a pet food bank. In January of 2014, Hearts Alive Village rescued its first two dogs, Roxy and Diesel. Today, the organization has saved thousands of dogs and cats with the help of the community, The Village.

Our mission is to ensure that no pet is
surrendered due to a lack of resources on the part of their human.
On a single night in 2021, 5,583 people were identified by the Point-in-Time Count as homeless in Southern Nevada. Additionally, with more than half unsheltered (55%), Southern Nevada ranks 3rd Nationally in its rate of people living in places not meant for human habitation. With such drastic rates of homelessness, we are compelled to do what we can. We understand that the homeless epidemic will not end overnight but hope that we can fill the days’ journey with just a bit more light. Many of the efforts in place to combat pet homelessness involve spaying, neutering, fostering, & shelters. We sought a different solution – a more preventative approach to ensure that pets are not surrendered in the first place. We strive to provide assistance to pets of homeless and those in need by offering food & supply distribution, assisting with funding to spay & neuter pets, meeting the needs of special food diets, medications, & vaccinations, & working to provide temporary housing for pets. In addition to offering material support, we find that our efforts to help humans care for their companions offer a sense of dignity, comfort, & hope.

Chihuahua Rescue Truckee Meadows, Inc., is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in the northern Nevada area. We help small dogs find forever homes. While in our foster care we get them medical care, vaccinations, spay/neuter and often get them dentals. All these expenses can put a hardship upon a smaller rescue group.
Sadly, Chihuahuas are the NOW THE NUMBER ONE or NUMBER TWO (changing with only the Pitbull) breed euthanized in the western United States’ shelters. Education is a piece of the problem – people simply believe because they are small – they are not euthanized, but that is incorrect.
We rescue Chihuahuas and other small dogs from euthanasia. We often take special needs dogs, help those senior dogs that would die in the shelter and find a foster home and work with some dogs with behavior issues, rehabilitate the dog and find great homes.
Often these tiny but mighty dogs may have been saved from an abusive or neglectful home and are often, thrown away because the owner no longer wants to keep them. We do help those dogs that can no longer be cared for by the owner or the owner is deceased.
It is a myth that these rescued Chihuahuas are aggressive and not suitable for family life. Many dogs end up in rescue because their owners find them difficult to manage once they turn from puppy to adolescent. Often, it is not the fault of the dogs but it is simply the owner has not helped to teach the adolescent dog what is acceptable behavior. Additionally and sadly if the Chihuahua wasn’t introduced to various situations, places, people, dogs and more…so now the small mighty Chihuahua is afraid of so many things. Having a dog takes commitment in time and energy. These rescued Chihuahuas turn into wonderful pets if given the chance to shine.

Golden Retriever Rescue Southern Nevada (GRRSN) was established in 2003 by a group of volunteers who had a common bond….the love of these amazing and gentle creatures, and the devotion to help and re-home as many neglected, abused and displaced dogs as possible. Since 2003 GRRSN has become a 501(c) (3) non-profit, all volunteer, organization that has rescued over 2,150 Golden Retrievers and other dogs in need. We are thankful for the families that have opened their hearts and homes to these beautiful animals and given them the second chance they deserved.
GRRSN is proud of its dedicated volunteers. Over 100 people donate their time and talent in a number of ways. Many families serve as foster families and provide a safe and loving environment for dogs on their way to their forever home. Others help by transporting dogs, searching the shelters, processing applications, evaluating prospective families, answering phone messages, updating the database, maintaining our website, manning the event booths, writing thank you notes…..the list goes on and on! In addition, we are fortunate to have the support of veterinarians all over the valley, as well as help from professional trainers, doggie daycare facilities and groomers, everyone plays an important role in the big picture.
Thankfully, GRRSN has never had to turn any dog in need away due to age or health reasons. We have achieved this through numerous fundraisers and fundraising gatherings…wine tasting, golf tournaments, holiday gift wrapping, BBQ’s, and Pet-A-Palooza, just to name a few! We have managed to have some fun as well at our Golden Days of Fall reunions and Golden swim parties. Nothing is better than a Golden gathering!
Golden Retrievers that come into the care of GRRSN may be turned over by animal shelters, picked up as strays, or in most cases, turned in by their owners. Dogs also become homeless due to death or illness of their owners, divorce, allergies, or relocation.
Each Golden is evaluated for health and temperament, examined by a veterinarian, brought up to date on all vaccinations and microchipped for identification purposes. All dogs are spayed or neutered before adoption. Dogs are housed in private foster homes located throughout Southern Nevada while they await adoption. Occasionally, Goldens with incurable health problems remain in a permanent foster home under the care of GRRSN.
