Maine Shelter License #F1494. We believe rescue is traumatic and often an overload on an animal who relies heavily upon their senses. No matter what the dog’s origin, the past was their home and was what they knew. Rescue pulls the animal from a familiar place, vets, spays and neuters, puts them in vehicles, crates and kennels, and immediately places them in a new environment. Even in the best of circumstances any human or animal would suffer a sensory shock at all this imposed change. Our ultimate goal is to remain conscious of the senses of the dogs as we move them to a better life.

To provide refuge, comfort, and medical attention to cats that have been surrendered, abandoned, injured, or abused – and to find permanent loving homes to adopt them.
HART is a mostly volunteer run organization that provides a safe refuge to hundreds of homeless cats each year. We rely on the support of individual donors to help us rescue and provide shelter for these innocent animals.
As a no-kill shelter with limited space, we must carefully balance how many cats we can accept while at the same time providing the best environment for the cats that are already in our care. We maintain an average population of about 85 cats at the shelter and have some cats who stay with us for months or years. We also rely on local foster homes to care for some of our cats – hundreds of kittens every year as well as a small number of senior and special needs adults.

The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society (formerly known as the Lewiston-Auburn SPCA) was incorporated as a nonprofit volunteer organization on February 25th 1885. Our first President was the Honorable Nelson M. Dingley, Jr., a former Governor of Maine, U.S. Congressman and founder of our local paper, the Lewiston Daily Journal (now known as the Sun Journal).
The Society’s original mission was to protect work horses and children from abuse. Volunteers carried on this mission until 1912 when they first decided to create a “home” for stray animals. Sadly, there was not enough money to buy the land needed for the Shelter so they continued to function primarily as an advocate for animal rights and welfare, housing animals in need at volunteers’ homes and boarding facilities.
