We are a no-kill organization
We do not euthanize any of the animals in our care simply to make room for new ones.

Home for Good Dog Rescue (HFGDR) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization headquartered in Berkeley Heights, NJ. We rescue dogs from high-kill shelters in the South, transport them to our rescue, and give them a second chance at life. As a uniquely 100-percent foster-based rescue, we place each dog into a loving foster home until adoption, and since our inception, we have rescued over 10,000 dogs and given them loving homes for good.
Our story began in 2010. At that time, a group of eight local New Jersey volunteers quite literally launched our rescue efforts out of a living room in Summit, NJ.
Our co-founders decided to focus their attention on areas throughout South Carolina and Georgia—namely in locales that demonstrated considerable populations of unwanted dogs, high rates of euthanasia, and significant need for animal rescue respite.
On our first-ever trip to the South that year, we created the ‘five-to-ten rule,’ wherein we agreed to only bring north as many dogs as we reasonably thought we could adopt out, a manageable number between five and ten. However, that first trip ultimately saw the transport of 30 rescued dogs to New Jersey, and every single one found a family that weekend. Eleven years later, we now save over 1000 lives a year.
Our volunteer base has grown from our eight original members to over 300, and we boast 130 active foster families who allow us to continue doing the work we do. And while we now operate out of an office, grooming, and retail space in Berkeley Heights, famous on Springfield Avenue for our signature blue front doors, our unprecedented fostering program remains the cornerstone of our mission.

Rescuing an animal must create good karma – though this is not why we do it. To rescue an animal is to literally save a life – to change their fate or destiny. Saving a friendly animal from a harsh life outside, from a hoarding situation or from having litter after litter because they are not spayed … lives saved. If some good karma comes along with it – bonus!
Zen can be considered a state of mind – particularly one that is calm. When we thought of the rescue process – going from a situation that is probably far from ideal to one of calmness and safety – the state of zen came to mind. That is the goal – to move animals into that calm state so that they can flourish and, in turn, find their forever homes.
The mission of the Karma Cat + Zen Dog Rescue Society is to provide a safe and peaceful haven for homeless, abandoned or abused animals. We will help decrease the number of cats and dogs being destroyed in kill shelters through the work of our adoption, trap-neuter-return, and education programs.

Someday every animal will be cherished and cared for, but right now there are far too many that are not. Sometimes they are abandoned. Sometimes they are relinquished by their owners (for valid reasons or not). Many times their situations are dire, and that’s where we come in. We’ve made it our job to help pets that are in a bad situation but are otherwise good companion animals who just need to find their place in the world.
We take them from desperate owners, from kill shelters in our own state and other states, and from the streets. We see to their veterinary care, providing spay/neuter, vaccines, microchips, deworming and general healthcare. We place them in foster homes with people/kids/pets who lead normal lives so we can learn their personalities and place them in homes where they will be appreciated and flourish!
We want to save more animals and send them home to adopters. Our adoption process is designed to be simple and affordable, though we are all volunteers, not a huge corporate entity with a large staff, so please bear with us – we’d love to help you find a new furry friend!

Our rescue focus is on adult dogs from the southeast that are in high kill shelters. Our plan is to fully vet, evaluate, and train as needed in preparation for adoption. When we save a life from the shelter, he is taken straight to the vet for a health checkup and while he is there he will be neutered or spayed, receive shots and given a microchip. Shake A Paw Rescue and Adoption Center was officially formed in the spring of 2012. We had been providing dog rescue and adoptions services quietly in our regular pet store with our “Forever a Home” Policy. We never wanted any of our dogs to be surrendered to a traditional animal shelter, and we have always accepted back any of our puppies or dogs that we have placed over the years. Customers have always been asking us if we would take their dog and find him a new home, even though they didn’t buy it from us.
“We don’t want to bring him to a shelter” is what we heard time and time again. We have always been known for our super-clean facilities and our caring and knowledgeable staff. The establishment of our Rescue and Adoption Center was a natural path for us to follow.
The Shake A Paw Rescue and Adoption Center is a New Jersey Non-Profit Animal Shelter and Charitable Organization. Located inside our Union Shake A Paw store, we care for between 15 and 20 adoptable dogs and puppies at any given time. Since I have a soft spot for older and senior dogs, you will sometimes find a older dog available for adoption. Whether it’s a puppy or a senior dog, all of our Rescues and Adoptions are loved and well-cared for by our caring staff of over 30 employees and volunteers. Wilma’s Orphans Inc. in New Jersey is a small not-for-profit [501c3] dog [only] rescue located in Jackson NJ that works very hard finding permanent homes for dogs who need a second, third or even fourth chance at happiness.
